Many people make the mistake when they renovate their kitchen or bathroom, of overlooking the cabinet hardware. This is a micro design element that can have a macro effect on the overall style of the room. The right hardware can give boring cabinets pizzazz or lend the right touch to polish off a themed style. If you are wondering on how to choose the perfect cabinet hardware, we have some helpful insight. It will help you understand the importance of finding the perfect hardware to compliment your space.
Where Do You Start?
The first thing you need to consider is what type of finish you want. With so many options, this can also be confusing. Look at the other design elements within your kitchen or bathroom. What kind of faucet did you pick out and what style or color cabinets are you using? If it is your kitchen, what do your appliances look like? Do you want to compliment or contrast? Do you want the color to pop or blend in? Now that you have an idea of finishes available, what styles interest you? There are many to sort through. We are featuring a few here to inspire you to think outside the box.
Art Deco
This is a streamlined and modern look inspired by the high-speed rails and steam ships of the 1920’s and 30’s. The style utilizes curved, slender and horizontal lines to create a sleek artful product. Often featured in brushed stainless steel or matte black finishes to mimic old ironware. As a result, they complement a wide range of themes and add a bit of simple, classic, yet artful elegance.
Glass Knobs
While they are relatively inexpensive, they look like a million bucks! Glass knobs are available in many colors and styles. They add a whimsical, personal style that can be considered either modern or retro. You can use them as a contrast on fun colored cabinets and drawers. Use them on distressed cabinets for a vintage feel. Another idea is to use clear glass as a way to help your cabinets stand out. Lastly, they can add a bit of bling to an otherwise boring room.
Novelty Knobs and Pulls
Artsy knobs add personality and create a theme. While it may be too overwhelming use on every cabinet and drawer, they could certainly be used as a statement on a stand alone piece. Another option would be to use either on only the drawers OR the cabinets. But, it is your home, and if you want to create a whimsical cooking room, then go for it! Add as much flair as you like. A word of warning, though, these pieces may be a bit pricier due to their unique design, so make sure to create room in your budget.
Backplates
Backplates are a two-part hardware consisting of a backpiece that lies flat, featuring a knob attached, usually in the center. Often ornamental and ornate, hence backplates will add an elegant Euro-style to your kitchen or bathroom. Use them in Mediterranean, Gothic, or Victorian themed spaces. Therefore, because of the craftsmanship involved, these can get expensive.
Bar Pulls
Sturdy and sleek, the linear bars run almost the entire width or length and lend a contemporary feel to any space. Not sure what length to use? Ask your designer what works best for the cabinets and drawers you chose. Do you want to express a minimalist, traditional, Shaker style? Either of these could work for all! While most often featured in a stainless finish, they are also available in a wide variety of finishes.
Bin or Cup Pulls
These resemble an upside down half moon cup-shaped pull. Bin or cup pulls became popular first in the mid-19 Century. This vintage look has experienced a resurgence recently and is a trend with staying qualities. They are available in just about any finish, even painted colors. However, since they greatly range in price, it is important to research exactly what you want.
Window Sash Pulls
Styled after the functional handles designed to lift heavy windows in the 1900’s. They are a minimalistic design that blends Colonial arts and craft with industrial styling. As a result, you can have a lot of fun with these. Ask your designer about mixing these in with different types of cabinet door hinges for a retro vintage look.
